we learn what actually matters through measuring
what we think matters.
This is a lesson that USGBC has learned in our
20 years of experience with the green building
rating system, LEED (Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design). As Albert Einstein noted,
“Not everything that can be counted counts, and
not everything that counts can be counted.” We
would add: and until you try to count, you might
not know which is which.
Many organizations in the United States support
green schools, and each of these organizations
guide action towards sustainability in different
ways. Defining common measures of success will
support this diverse group and give structure to
the action-oriented pathways that they already
provide to schools.
The project we have been informally calling
“Measuring Our Impact” works collectively with
these organizations toward defining measures
of success for all schools. This project involves
looking at the overlap between what the green
schools community is currently measuring, what
